West Auckland

West Auckland is, as the name suggests, the western portion of New Zealand’s largest urban area, Auckland. Residential and industrial suburbs west of the Whau River give way to the lush rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges and the beautiful black sand beaches of Auckland’s West Coast.

West Auckland was once home to the iconic Crown Lynn ceramic manufacturers. The clay soils in the vicinity of the Whau drew the attention of potters as early as the 1850s, and by the turn of the century there were a cluster of brick and tile manufacturers in the suburb of New Lynn. One such company diversified into china production partly in response to the increased demand during World War II, and the Crown Lynn company grew into the largest pottery manufacturer in the Southern hemisphere. Low-priced imports cut into Crown Lynn’s market share in the 1980s, and in 1989 the factory closed – ending 140 years of pottery manufacturing in West Auckland, although studio pottery remains an important part of the arts scene in the west.

Relatively cheap housing in West Auckland has attracted a young, multicultural population. There is a stereotype that ‘Westies’ are working class Pakeha with questionable morals and poor taste – a stereotype perpetuated by popular media, including the hit TV show ‘Outrageous Fortune’ and the work and persona of late comic Ewan Gilmour. However, West Auckland is in fact a diverse and culturally inclusive area. Maori, Asian and Pacific people each make up around 15% of the population of the area, and people from many different backgrounds, including a significant number of New Zealand Dutch, also call West Auckland home.

West Auckland is a veritable playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The Waitakere Ranges’ coastal rainforest park is criss-crossed with hiking and mountain biking trails, most notably the 77km Hillary Trail opened in 2010. Named for the celebrated New Zealand mountaineer, the trail is a self-guided four day tramp beginning at the Arataki Visitor Centre near Titirangi and ending at Muriwai. The Ranges are also home to four popular surf beaches: Piha, Muriwai, Bethells (Te Henga) and Karekare. The beaches are notable for their black sand; this is due to the high iron content of the sand, derived from the ancient volcanoes in the area. The sand has a tendency to heat up in direct sunlight, occasionally enough to cause minor burns. Many a Kiwi kid has memories of ‘hot-footing’ it across the hot black sands, trying not to burn tender soles! Surfing is a major pastime at these west coast beaches, and Piha has hosted national and international surf competitions. The horse treks at Muriwai are another popular beach attraction.

Between the beaches, the eclectic arts and cultural scene, and West Auckland’s wineries and farmer’s markets, there’s plenty to attract visitors from the wider Auckland region and beyond.

Another excellent review for Abacus Electrical

"Dear Stu, It is almost twelve months since you attended to the complete rewiring of our property at 1 Beacholm Road, Takapuna, however hardly a day goes by without us being thankful for the great service you provided. This was always going to be a difficult job, an old house with the wiring in a dangerous condition. In spite of many unknowns, your quote was accurate and spot on. I know it is a well used cliché, but you were "on time and on budget" on a job that had a number of challenges. Throughout you kept us updated on the progress and provided options in the solving of the unforeseen as they arose. Although, by the nature of the job, there was major internal disruption you ensured the needs of everyone were met and the clean-up at the end was second to none. Your workmanship was professional and to the highest of standards in all aspects and your pricing most fair. This message of thanks has been unsolicited but very much deserved. We would have no hesitation in recommending your services to anyone requiring electrical work." Thank you again George and Marie

Another excellent review for Valley Dog Daycare

"Floki my Hunterway Mastiff X has been going to Valley dog with Trudi 2 days a week for 6 months. I had been looking into other daycares before settling on Valley Dogs and the difference was instantly noticeable from the first time I came to look around, the dogs in her care are happy to be there, the service she provides is invaluable. When I turn down her road Floki’s ears perk up and the excited whining starts, I know when I pick him up at the end of the day he will be tired and any behavioral problems that come from boredom won’t be an issue at all. Before Valley Dogs, I would have to walk Floki on leash constantly, he had a residing fear of men from before I got him and would react aggressively towards them if off leash, within a month of Floki regularly going to Valley Dogs this behavior had been mended, Trudis knowledge in dog behavior was a godsend and not only did she help train my dog, she also trained me on how my behavior was affecting my dog. I am so thankful to have found somewhere I can leave my dog and know he will be safe, socialized and happy." - Petra Unkovich.

Some great feedback for Shade Systems

"We only had a two and half months from inception of the project to implementation. With the opening of the Maire Maeva Nui Celebrations in July on Rarotonga this year, it was an almost unrealistic dream to complete the project in time. This year was especially significant as it was the 50th year Independent Celebrations for the Cook Islands. Once final approval was received from CI Government, we worked closely and quickly with the team at Shade Systems to finalize the design, manufacture, deliver and install the two canopies on Rarotonga. I would definitely recommend Shade Systems to any individual ,company or government organisation. Their service and products are of a high standard and quality well-suited to the Cook Islands. The two 28m x 14m wide canopies stretched over a synthetic grass area, was constructed within the open grounds at National Auditorium Culture Centre – an icon building which is the heart of all Constitution Celebrations. Local contractors working with Shade Systems managed to prepare the site and all services prior to the arrival of the membrane structure with only 1 week to go. Several thousand Cook Islanders and visitors enjoyed the new ‘outside canopy area’ during this year’s celebrations which has also enhanced the overall appearance of the Culture Centre. The result is beyond any of our expectations and the space is always utilized for many events." - Romani

Some great feedback for Cablecom Ltd

"As Manager Accommodation for Manukau City Council from 2005 to November 2010 I had a good deal of exposure to Cablecom Limited as they were MCC’s preferred vendor for all communication cabling work. I managed the $22 million refurbishment of MCC’s Civic building which included approximately $1 million of cabling work. Part of Cablecom’s contract involved a number of tricky cutovers with serious repercussions if not done correctly given that the building continued to operate fully throughout the 2 year refurbishment. These were all completed expertly without any disruption to service. Whether it be this particular contract or just cabling of data and phones for a standard accommodation move, Cablecom’s workmanship was always of a high standard and delivered with an outstanding level of professionalism and customer service. I would have no difficulty recommending Cablecom to anyone vendor looking for commercial data and voice cabling work." - John

Another excellent review for Specialist Maintenance Services

As the owner of numerous rental properties in West Auckland, I have a constant need to get repairs done on these properties, usually with little or no advance notice. By the very nature of the type of tenants attracted to West Auckland they do not take care of the properties or give notice of a problem until it becomes serious. Over the past 10 years I have used Specialist Maintenance Services exclusively to maintain and repair these houses. In all instances their quick response, attention to detail and willingness to work all hours to get the job done are excellent. Dave’s personal supervision of his team means that I can have confidence in knowing that my real estate portfolio is in good hands. This allows me to carry on my own business without having to travel from one side of the city to the other. I would willingly recommend Dave and the team at Specialist Maintenance Services for all types of construction work. -Eddie
